Rain Rain Go Away

July 22nd, 2009

Rain rain go away…have you taken note that it has rained more than it hasn’t on Fridays since we started the market? Last week was no exception…but we braved the storm to bring you fresh produce, yummy baked goods, and the most tasty lemonade around. Twin Maple Farms started the day with sweet corn, which my friends, is worth a trip out in the rain. Galen from the Occasional Treat baked sunflower shaped cookies for our Healthy Plant theme. The Master Gardeners were on site working the plant clinic and the Moorsetown Garden Club had a beautiful display of seasonal flowers. Herb from Point Phillips Perenials gave a delightful talk about sun loving plants just as the skies opened up and we all got doused with a summer rain…plants included. So in the words of my new friend John Place, “Let the rain come”…the crops needed the watering and we are not chased away by a few raindrops. When you look outside this coming Friday and it is raining, more than likely, we will all be there ready to shop, have fun and Get Fresh on Friday!

The second market day

July 22nd, 2009

The weather cooperated, what a gorgeous day! All the vendors showed and we added one, Goulds Produce from Broadheadsville, PA. They had some great looking strawberries today. Did you get a chance to check out Janice at the Graver Farmstead tent? Last week, she gave out a recipe for strawberry dressing….soooo yummy! I made it the very next day with the berries I bought from Double Y Farm. Even my honey, Sean, liked it! This week Janice had a recipe for Banana Poppy Seed dressing. Sounds a little different but it smelled wonderful! I can’t wait to try it!
Most of the produce vendors sold out in the first couple of hours…so you have to get there early. Sue Kiddek, the gardening expert for the Morning Call, was on-site to show us how to plant a strawberry pot with herbs. This is a great way to add a small herb garden to your yard. There is nothing like cooking with fresh herbs and it is soo satisfying to have grown them yourself!
I hope you can join us. We are enjoying the market, the vendors, and are looking forward to more produce, more events and to getting “Fresh on Friday.”

Bath Farmers’ Market - the June days

July 13th, 2009

June has been a learning expereince. We have battled hot sun and coffee and we found that the Daily Grind offers some wicked lemonade…the best! We’ve battled the torrential downpours and we all went home…so I am sorry if you came out that day but a hail storm threatened to make seives out of tents! We (the BFM committee) are striving to make this market successful for the vendors and the consumers…you! Lorraine has been working hard to bring some unique events to the market. We have had activities for kids, programs delivered by the Master Gardeners, the Green Man talking about composting, and a solar oven guy. Did you know that you can cook outside, powered by the sun, using cardboard covered with aluminum foil? Amazing!
Our vendors are terrific! Twin Maple Farms started the “What The Heck Is That!” contest. If you are knowledgable about old pieces farm equipment, then you may be able to win some of their yummy potatoes! Unangst Farm, another local farm, has partnered with Twin Maple Farms to bring their raspberries to the market each week. Get them early because they go fast! Keepsake Dairy has tasty cheeses and yogurt. You can sample before you buy them. Graver Farms, Goulds Produce and Blue Blaze Farm offer a wide variety produce picked fresh for market. Janice of Graver Farmstead offers a free recipe for a dressing each week. This last week was a raisin dressing for broccoli salad. Don’t knock it until you try it..in the words of Rachael Ray, “yummo”! Dutch Hill Preserves is selling PA Maple Syrup and plenty of yummy preserves. And don’t forget to pick up some homemade baked goods and candy to get you through the week.
Stop by the Bath Farmers’ market tent and let us know how we are doing. Also, you can register to win a green man ornament and other goodies donated by our generous vendors. The market is open on Fridays, 3-7 pm. Stop by each week to get fresh on Friday!

Bath Farmers’ Market Opening Day

June 10th, 2009

Opening Day…the culmination of 4 months of tireless work by the BFM (Bath Farmers’ Market) committee. The weather…rainy, all day! I am thinking, is this a sign?? Lorraine, our events coordinator and FM expert, was MIA and on a surprise vacation. The vendors arrive closer to 3 pm than 2pm…wo my heart can’t take the pressure! The Inspector from the PA Dep’t of Agriculture drove onto the field and then her car broke down. Another sign? And then, the people came and shopped and gave us wonderful feedback. Standing there in the rain, we knew we had started something good. And through it all (tow truck getting stuck on the field and more rain) we acheived success. The Bath Farmers’ Market is open for business! Fridays, 3-7pm at the Keystone Park in Bath. Check out our vendors and our special events (see events page on the website). Come down and shop to ‘Get Fresh on Friday!’
